I Have OHP! Now What?

You have the Oregon Health Plan (OHP) and want to start therapy. Great! But finding a therapist can feel confusing. Here are a few simple steps to help.

Step 1: Find Out Which OHP Plan You Have

Most people with OHP are part of a Coordinated Care Organization (CCO). Your CCO helps manage your health care, including mental health care.

Look at your OHP information to find the name of your CCO on your insurance card. You can also call OHP Client Services if you are not sure: 1-800-699-9075.

If you have a CCO, you can search its provider directory or call the CCO to ask which therapists are in network. Oregon also has a Behavioral Health Provider Directory that can help you find therapists who accept OHP.

Step 2: Make Sure the Therapist Is In Network

Finding a therapist who says they “take OHP” is a good start, but there is one more step.

Ask: “Are you in network with my OHP plan?”

Different OHP members may have different CCOs or health plans. It is always a good idea to confirm your coverage before your first appointment.

Step 3: What Will Therapy Cost?

For people with OHP benefits, covered mental health services are provided at no cost to the member. That means you usually do not have a deductible, coinsurance, or copay for covered therapy services.

Your therapist or CCO can help you check that the service you need is covered.

Step 4: Find Someone Who Feels Like a Good Fit

Insurance matters, but so does the person sitting across from you.

Think about what you want help with. Maybe it is:

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Trauma

  • LGBTQ+ concerns

  • ADHD or Autism

  • Family problems

  • Stress or major life changes

You can also think about the kind of therapist you want. Do you want someone warm and relaxed? Someone who gives you tools and homework? Someone who understands an important part of your identity?

Many therapists offer a short consultation before you start. Use that time to ask questions and see how you feel talking with them.

It Is Okay If the First Therapist Is Not the Right Fit

Therapy is personal. You may like the first therapist you meet, or you may need to meet a few people.

That is okay.

A good therapist should make you feel heard, respected, and safe enough to be yourself. If the connection does not feel right, you can ask about seeing someone else.
