Is This Therapist a Good Fit for Me?

Finding a therapist can feel hard, especially if you are Queer. You deserve a therapist who respects you, understands you, and makes you feel safe. The good news is that there are ways to find the right fit.

Start by looking for affirming therapists

When searching online, look for words like LGBTQIA2S+ affirming, gender-affirming, or queer-inclusive. These terms often mean the therapist has training and experience working with LGBTQIA2S+ clients.

Check their profile carefully

Read the therapist’s website or profile. Do they clearly say they work with LGBTQIA2S+ people? Do they mention topics like gender identity, sexual orientation, or minority stress? If they do, that is a good sign.

Think about what matters most to you

Ask yourself what you want help with. This could be anxiety, depression, relationships, trauma, or identity questions. Some therapists focus more on certain areas, so finding someone who matches your needs can make therapy more helpful.

Ask questions before you start

Many therapists offer a free phone call or consultation. You can ask questions like:

  • Have you worked with LGBTQIA2S+ clients before?

  • How do you support trans and nonbinary clients?

  • What is your approach to therapy?

A good therapist will welcome these questions.

Pay attention to how you feel

After the first few sessions, check in with yourself. Do you feel heard and respected? Do you feel safe being honest? If not, it is okay to try someone else. Therapy should feel supportive, not stressful.

Remember: you have choices

You are allowed to take your time and find the right therapist. The right fit can make a big difference in your mental health and healing.
